In early October 2016, HURRICANE MATTHEW was responsible for many lost lives and damage estimated in billions of dollars. The savage storm tore through Haiti and went up the Eastern US Coastline and surrounding areas. Although much of the devastation in the Carolinas has been addressed , there are still locations where HURRICANE MATTHEW left permanent marks of destruction. Areas heaviest hit with flooding are still not ready for families to return home. Well, the World Meteorologic Organization has just released their 2017 list of tropical cyclone names and they have officially retired "MATTHEW" because of the deadly impacts it made in 2016. Also retired is "OTTO" because of its extreme nature. "MATTHEW" is being replaced with "MARTIN" and "OTTO" is switched to "OWEN". These are just names to some folks but to others they are symbols of nature's worst storms in recorded history. This rotation list for tropical cyclones encompasses areas of the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, North Atlantic Ocean, & Eastern North Pacific Ocean. So say good-bye to MATTHEW but don't forget the new season officially returns in June!

MYRTLE BEACH MARATHON is an annual tradition attracting thousands of people from all over the country. The course is described as " fast, flat and beautiful". Ripley's Aquarium is the sponsor for "Neon Night 5K" and a "Fun Run" on Friday evening, March 3. The MYRTLE BEACH MARATHHON and HALF-MARATHON will take place on the morning of Saturday, March 4. Instead of a February event, the marathon dates are March 2-4, 2017. The course has seen tweeks over the years but the lack of hills and our beautiful scenery on Ocean Blvd. have remained staples of what makes the race a fun, fast trip! The course begins near Broadway at the Beach, just north of the intersection at 21st Avenue North & Bob Grissom Parkway. It departs up Grissom Parkway and down Mr. Joe White Avenue before heading south on Kings Hwy. toward the Myrtle Beach International Airport. There's a quick turn into The Market Common and this gives spectators a fun place to watch the halfway point. Upon exiting, the route turns into Ocean Blvd. where runners spend their longest stretch going through the heart of downtown....past The Skywheel. From this point, Half-Marathoners peel off while full distance runners continue through the "Golden Mile" and the "Cabana District". Runners continue with a quick trip by Grand Dunes and back down Kings Hwy. and over to Grissom Parkway. The finish line stops at Myrtle Beach Pelicans field. So whether you are a participant or here to watch the event, it is going to be a great time and the weather is cooperating with sunny skies, no rain and daytime temperatures in the 50's & 60's!

When you live in The Carolinas, every day is SOUTHERN FOOD DAY! However, there has been a declaration by www.foodimentary.com and southern food now has a special day all of its own. The day of celebration is Jan. 22 and all sorts of delicious foods will be recognized because of heritage. What actually makes a food fall into the category of "southern"....well, it began with how well it grew in the south. You can start with raw items such as collard greens, cabbage, okra, sweet potatoes, pecans & peanuts.... and then the list crosses with cooked foods such as fried chicken, ham biscuits, bacon, chicken bog, BBQ, Lemon Meringue Pie, Coconut Cake, and many more desserts. Don't forget that corn was not only a cooked vegetable but it was also processed for cornbread and grits. Plus, there's a variety of peas and beans which need to be shelled and then cooked, dried, or frozen for future consumption. Most Southerners have their own family recipes and preparation techniques. These can vary throughout different regions or areas in the South. We hope you will honor NATIONAL SOUTHERN FOOD DAY on Sunday, January 22 and go back to the basics of good Southern living. It started in the kitchen and still remains there for many. And remember....there are different ways to prepare those collard greens....but the true secret is not to overcook them!

Crews around the Carolinas have been getting ready all week for the possibility of wintry weather over the upcoming weekend. And yes, there will be some winter weather conditions hitting areas across South Carolina & North Carolina. So whether you are traveling or just staying at home, be aware of the overall conditions and how it can affect you. The latest weather reports for the Grand Strand indicate that we should be prepared for heavy rain with frigid temperatures. Fortunately, we should be spared from snow, ice, & freezing rain. So if you are planning to build snowmen or snow angels, it may have to wait until you can travel west for any snow accumulation. OLD MAN WINTER rarely knocks on our door so we must wait and see if he really stops by. Stay prepared.....have a good weekend, and dream about those warm spring days on the Intracoastal Waterway!

When you hear mention of "RED, WHITE, & BLUE", it is a patriotic symbol for freedom, strength, & courage through the national flag. The Fourth of July is a national celebration honoring the birthdate of Independence Day. Through the centuries, the United States has risen to be the World's Leader. We are envied by other countries who have never experienced significant freedoms which are integral parts of our everyday living. So what do the flag colors really mean? Well, RED is for Courage...WHITE is for Purity...and BLUE is for Loyalty. The colors are characteristic of innocence, valour, vigilance, perseverance, justice and leadership. Stars are a symbol of heaven while stripes symbolize light rays emanating from the sun. The RED, WHITE & BLUE flies high this week as Americans celebrate with pride!

The SUN FUN FESTIVAL is back this week after a five-year hiatus. Organizers hope it will bring nostalgia back into Myrtle Beach. Many locals and tourists still moan the 2006 loss of the former Myrtle Beach Pavilion Amusement Park. Later in 2011, the SUN FUN FESTIVAL was also lost. It was originally designed in 1951 to attract tourists to an otherwise slow weekend at the beginning of summer. Since these losses, there has been considerably less interaction between hoteliers, businesses, locals, & visitors along the oceanfront and Ocean Boulevard. In an effort to revive the event, The Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce recruited help from local businesses to step-up and sponsor the SUN FUN FESTIVAL. The position of the chamber transitioned into an event promoter instead of being an event producer. Thus, a group came together headed by owners of The Gay Dolphin and they are making full use of the Sun Fun brand. Locals are hopeful it will have a positive economic impact on the first weekend in June producing increased traffic to downtown Myrtle Beach. The schedule runs June 4, 5, & 6 at Plyer Park near the Boardwalk at Joe White Avenue and North Ocean Boulevard. There will be a Sun Fun King & Queen, parade, parachute demonstrations, and concerts with bands such as The Entertainers, The Swingin' Medallions, Too Much Sylvia, The Castaways, and more!. Maurice Williams from The Zodiacs will serve as Grand Marshall. It is free and more information is available at (843) 448-6550 or www.sunfunmb.com.

Yes, there is ongoing discussion within Myrtle Beach City Council to temporarily close Ocean Boulevard between 8th Avenue North and Joe White Avenue. The experiment will likely have planned closures that occur during Hot Summer Nights' events between 4pm thru 1am. This effort is done in order to increase foot traffic for boulevard area businesses. Some merchants are skeptical while others are willing to entertain the idea in hopes of bringing a significant influx of tourists to the area. A similar idea was proposed in 2014 but it did not gain any popularity. Since then, the discussion has surfaced again due to successes in Charleston and North Myrtle Beach. It is now being reviewed and will probably be limited to one summer night weekly but only as an experiment to see how tourists and merchants react to the plan. The ultimate goal is to improve business along Ocean Boulevard....not drive it away.

Over the past three (3) decades, entertainment theatres have become very popular along the Grand Strand. Some have become Myrtle Beach's most successful attractions while others were less popular and became short-lived venues. A new theater has joined the mix and it is known as GTS THEATRE. It is located at 1220 Port Drive..... next door to JAMMIN' LEATHER off Bypass 17 on Hwy. 501. It started well with positive customer reviews and good ratings on Trip Advisor. There will be (4) shows during 2016 starting with MOTOR CITY MUSICAL. This is a journey into Motown with so much talent from the '60's and '70's. This musical cabaret begins February 2016 and features artists from the iconic era such as Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, The Four Tops & more! In May, VAUDEVILLE THE SHOW recreates Burlesque Variety which is a lost theatrical art with dazzling fresh style. SUPER BOWL 50 is the upcoming American Football Game that will be highly watched as the champion of the National Football League is determined. It will be held at the home of San Francisco 49er's new stadium known as LEVI'S STADIUM which is located in Santa Clara, California. Kick-off begins at 3:30 PM (PST) or 6:30 PM (ET) on Sunday, February 7,2016. The final competition is between National Football League Conference Champion CAROLINA PANTHERS and the American Football Conference Champion DENVER BRONCOS. So what should one expect in this 50th Edition of the SUPER BOWL? It is rumored that national TV ads will be more conservative......tickets will be the widest selection ever offered... and Lady Gaga will perform the National Anthem. Bottom Line.....it is going to be one heck of an exciting game with MVP Frontrunner Cam Newton for the CAROLINA PANTHERS facing Peyton Manning for DENVER BRONCOS. At present, CAROLINA PANTHERS are favored by 5.5 points with just 4 days to go. Alternate sources also favor Cam Newton and the Carolina offense to win by 14 points. No one really knows who will take home 2015 honors, but the result should be hugely reflective on quarterback play. There is a lot to be said for both teams but the Panthers are highly supported in North Carolina and South Carolina. Don't forget game-time 'cause we all will be watching........GO PANTHERS!

Whether you're looking for long-range weather predictions or simply the daily forecast, there have been lots of abnormal conditions across the country in the past months. Although the Southeast was spared from hurricane destruction during the 2015 season, it did suffer severely from historic flooding that hit record-high levels and continues to cause devastating problems for many areas. The Fall 2015 experienced above average temperatures with Christmas Day highs near 80 degrees and only dropping a few degrees at night. Now that 2016 has arrived, temperatures have cooled into normal ranges but what is ahead thru March and how will the Southeast be affected by EL Nino? Answers are unpredictable but forecasters seem to think more rain is coming along with cooler than normal temperatures.....possible ice, gusty winds, unsettled conditions and a late spring. Despite these scientific predictions from experts with modern technologies, THE FARMER'S ALMANAC might be a reliable source to consider. One must keep checking and be weather smart because El Nino will likely affect everyone. Both temperatures and rainfall have been the strongest on record in (18) years so stay prepared.....only El Nino knows!

As the Grand Strand Area continues to grow, so do new business names around town especially those with regional/national backgrounds. The latest name to be added to the list is PANERA BREAD which plans to open its first bakery café in the Myrtle Beach Area in a new building to be constructed next to Starbucks Coffee on U.S. Hwy. 501 in Carolina Forest Commons. Plans for the business were submitted in October 2015 and are expected to receive final approval in the very near future. It's unclear at this time as to when the restaurant will open. PANERA BREAD has become a popular social hangout much like Starbucks, where patrons are just likely to be working on their laptop computers and munching cranberry orange muffins while others file through for a breakfast bacon, egg & cheese ciabatta or a bowl of turkey chili. The company has built a tremendous reputation for using high-quality ingredients shunning artificial trans fat and MSG. They also serve antibiotic-free meats and vegetarian-fed chicken. This new location in Carolina Forest Commons is only minutes from Clarion Hotel & Conference Center. Clarion guests will be able to take advantage of this popular eatery while vacationing on the waterway!

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina has been graced with cultural beauty through THE ART MUSEUM which is dedicated to being one of the finest visual arts museums in the Carolinas. THE MUSEUM first opened to the public in June 1997 but was conceived thirteen (13) years earlier by a small group of Myrtle Beach visionaries which consisted of artists, art patrons, business leaders, cultural enthusiasts, and private citizens. The building dates to 1924 when it was built by textile industry leader, Eugene Cannon, in the Cabana Section of Myrtle Beach. It was sold to Col. Elliot White Springs for use by his family and Executives from Springs Industries. At that time, the building was re-christened as SPRINGMAID VILLA. In 1975, the Villa changed hands again and was slated for demolition. A campaign by several noted locals was made to save SPRINGMAID VILLA. Finally, arrangements were secured to move the 150-ton structure. It was loaded and taken to a new home eight (8) miles south to undeveloped property owned by Myrtle Beach Farms Company, precursor to Burroughs & Chapin Company. A corporation was formed along with a new non-profit Board of Trustees who were charged with converting and later managing the public Art Museum. After long efforts, doors to THE MUSEUM opened in 1997. In recognition for the land donation, it was re-named for the Founders of Myrtle Beach Farms and became FRANKLIN G. BURROUGHS---SIMEON B. CHAPIN ART MUSEUM. Through unique exhibitions and interactive & creative programs, THE ART MUSEUM now serves residents and visitors of all ages. The facility consists of ten total galleries on first & second floors along with an Art Studio & Workshop, Library, Reception Room with grand piano, and covered Tea Porch with breathtaking ocean views. It is located at 3100 South Ocean Boulevard in Myrtle Beach, SC. For more information, call (843) 238-2510 or e-mail info@MyrtleBeachArtMuseum.org.

The summer season is now approaching and there are always questions about taking FIDO to one of his favorite places....the BEACH! Effective May 1 thru Labor Day, dogs are allowed on the beach before 10:00 AM and after 5:00 PM. On the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk, dogs are allowed only between 5:00 AM and 10:00 AM during the same date period. At ALL times, dogs must be on a leash and you must pick-up and dispose of any waste. Summer laws may vary annually so it is recommended to check for new policies each year. And, DO NOT leave FIDO in the car even with the windows cracked. This becomes a heated oven and can be a deadly situation for humans and pets alike. Treat your dog with love and care and FIDO will prove to be man's best friend!

SAINT PATRICK'S DAY or the Feast of Saint Patrick is a cultural & religious celebration occurring annually on March 17 which is the death date of the patron saint of Ireland or "SAINT PATRICK". It was made official in the early seventeenth century and is observed within the Catholic Church, Lutheran Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, and Anglican Communion. The day commemorates Saint Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland as well as celebrating Irish heritage & culture in general. It is customary to wear shamrocks and green clothing or accessories. Wearing the color green has grown through the centuries and remains symbolic of the day. In the United States, it is not a legal holiday but celebrations are widely recognized throughout every region in our country because of Irish and Irish-American cultures. We have prominent displays of green color, eating of traditional Irish foods, drinking of Irish brews, religious observances, and parades. In the Grand Strand Area, there will be Irish events starting in Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach on Saturday, March 14 and running through Tuesday, March 17. From live music & entertainment... to a parade..... to food vendors....plus special kids activities....there are numerous events throughout the area. On the waterway, Clarion Myrtle Beach is preparing a special "Traditional Irish Dinner". There will be green draft beer, Irish Whiskey, and other specials on the evening of March 17, 2015. Celebrate this old Irish tradition with us and experience "THE LUCK OF THE IRISH!"

It was built in 1937 and restored in 2004. The MYRTLE BEACH TRAIN DEPOT is a location of much history and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The original ribbon cutting was on May 6, 1937 which was one (1) year before Myrtle Beach officially became a town. Atlantic Coastline Railroad and The Chapin Company jointly built The Depot to provide a much needed transportation link between the mainland and the beach. When built, the structure was enhanced with some Mediterranean features reflective of architecture in the day. For three (3) decades, it served as an activity hub with travelers and boxcars full of supplies and building materials. In 1967, The Depot was sold and offices and warehouses were built around it. The view of The Depot was blocked and it was basically forgotten. After many years of uncertainty, The Depot escaped demolition and was finally restored. It sits in the heart of Myrtle Beach and is an active link to the past. Today, the MYRTLE BEACH TRAIN DEPOT is a public facility which hosts meetings, receptions, and gatherings. It boasts exposed wood tresses, plank flooring, brick walls, and sliding freight doors. For more information about the restoration, call 843-918-1050. For event rental, call 843-918-4906. The past lives through the MYRTLE BEACH TRAIN DEPOT located at 851 Broadway Street.

For the past five (5) years, a group from Columbia has organized a flyover of military aircraft along the South Carolina coast from the North Carolina border to the Georgia state line. The crowds on the beach are urged to display American Flags and wave & cheer as a video is made from the ground and from the air. All is posted on the internet as a salute and thank you to active military both deployed and stateside. Because of budget cuts, the 20th Fighter Wing at Shaw Air Force Base declined from flyovers with F-16's which were used previously. However, they are being replaced with vintage military aircraft and the owners will fly their own planes along the coast as a replacement. Many will carry Veterans ranging from WWII to Afghanistan. The route will be shortened to start at Myrtle Beach and fly to Hilton Head which is approximately 300 miles. There will be 3-4 planes in Myrtle Beach....3-4 planes in Charleston....and 3-4 planes in Hilton Head. This way the major length of the coastline is covered. SALUTE OUR SOLDIERS FROM THE SHORE on July 4 starting around 1:00 PM in Myrtle Beach. This is special recognition on a special day acknowledging our freedom!

Smoke Free Hotel in Myrtle BeachChoosing a smoke-free hotel in Myrtle Beach is an important vacation choice for many travelers. The reasons are obvious but especially as it relates to health and comfort benefits. Non-smoking accommodations and smoke-free public areas are major contributors to an environment of less nicotine exposure, less polluted surfaces, and cleaner fabrics in blankets, upholstery, and draperies. Clarion Hotel Myrtle Beach is a smoke-free facility and takes pride in the delivery of their resort product. Being a smoke-free establishment has become an enhancement for leisure vacationers, business travelers, and meeting attendees. It effects all age groups as well. At Clarion Myrtle Beach, there are designated outdoor areas on the ground level where smoking is permitted. However, it is restrictive within the entire building including balconies unless the balcony door is closed tightly to protect accommodations.. There has been an ongoing controversy throughout the hospitality industry about the effectiveness of a smoke-free facility in a resort area. It becomes the responsibility of the employees to help monitor smokeless policies onsite. Consequently, Clarion Hotel Myrtle Beach finds that it does not harm their business but it creates a better environment promoting good health. Thus, there is not a decline in customers as feared by some area business including hotels, restaurants, attractions, and bars. As for second-hand smoke, it has been proven to cause cancer. This term refers to smoke from the burning end of a cigarette and smokes exhales by smokers. Once again, a strong health issue is being addressed and it is an advantage to be a smoke-free hotel in Myrtle Beach. Through proper training, the Clarion Staff is very effective in presenting a smokeless facility to their guests. The "Comfy Rooms" and "Cozy Vacations" promoted by Clarion Hotel Myrtle Beach have been supported by their ability to be smoke-free.
